Gee Whiz Kidz
Bio
Started in 2006, Gee Whiz Kidz are a fun and energetic band from Melbourne, Victoria, who play a unique brand of folk/rock music for kids. Not your average kids band, they play a range of instruments from violin to didgeridoo, double bass to mandolin. They deliver a range of songs including upbeat action numbers to get the kids involved at live performances, as well as humorous storytelling ditties that teach subtle moral lessons while sparking kids’ imaginations. Reflecting the classic family entertainment of Peter Combe and Rolf Harris, blended with song writing influences like Johnny Cash and Paul Kelly, GWK aim to step aside from the synthetic pop trend of current kids entertainment to deliver a less condescending “real” music experience that is enjoyed by children and parents alike.
Some of our faces may be familiar:
Damien Pratt former drummer of Violetine plays drums, guitar, and sings. He is forever wacky and was born to entertain. Kids can't help but love him and parents can't help but laugh.
John Bedggood has many credits under his belt including playing various instruments with The Wilson Pickers, Bernard Fanning, Lior, Carus, Things of Stone and Wood and many others. He is an integral part of Gee Whiz Kidz, playing violin, keys and mandolin just to name a few.
Shane Godbehere, our main driving vocalist/songwriter and guitarist, started this project with his catchy melodies and imaginative stories. His didgeridoo adds a true Australian flavour.
Chris Hoy plays double bass and electric bass which completes our rhythm section. His foot stomping, hip twisting bass lines are infectious and get everyone grooving along.
Moova the Dancing Cow our lovable dance instructing mascot always gets the kids up and moo-ving to the beat.
GWK have gained valuable live performance experience since the band’s inception, performing over 60 shows so far. These include opening the stage for The Black Sorrows at The Age Harvest Picnic at Hanging Rock, playing along side Ross Wilson and James Blundell at Churchill Island Working Horse Festival and sharing a stage with Daryl Braithewaite at Eildon Music Festival. We have even opened for Humphrey B.Bear at the Royal Melbourne Show! Other events we have played at include RCH Good Friday Appeal, Children’s Week Launch at Melbourne Zoo, Maroondah Festival, Pako Festa, St Kilda Festival, Monash Carols by Candlelight, Port Fairy Folk Festival and Brunswick Music Festival. We are also looking forward to our debut appearance at Fun4Kids Festival in 2009.
To date Gee Whiz Kidz have self released 2 EPs, both available for sale through the website, with a third currently in the works. Our second EP, Everybody’s Singing It, features a guest vocal by Greg Arnold (Things of Stone and Wood) on the lead track Hairy Legs. One dollar from every CD sold is being donated to The Australian Red Cross “Good Start Breakfast Club" which provides healthy breakfasts to children in disadvantaged areas. We have received great feedback on the CD including a rave review in Melbourne’s Child magazine.
